Workers at a Belgian recycling plant made a macabre discovery this week: a human foot amid the waste.

Staff at the CETT waste centre, in the southern town of Rochefort, found the appendage on a sorting line Wednesday morning, Thomas Monseu, a company official, told AFP.

“We called the police who asked us to stop working,” he said. “Work on the line was stopped for the day, before resuming today.”

The state prosecutor’s office in nearby Namur said an investigation was underway as they worked to identify the victim.

Monseu said it was the first time anything of the sort had happened at the plant.

“It’s the first — and the last, I hope,” he said.
