A section of a mountainside collapsed in Nepal as days of heavy rain triggered landslides and floods across the country, leaving at least 24 people dead and 14 missing.

Video of the collapse shows earth and rock breaking away and surging downhill within seconds. In footage described by India Today, residents can be heard shouting as the slope gives way near homes.

The disaster has affected several districts, including Baglung, Myagdi, Manang, Parbat and Palpa. Officials cited by India Today reported 10 deaths in Baglung, six in Myagdi, two in Manang and five in Palpa. Another person died in a landslide in Dhanusha district.

Homes buried in Baglung

In Baglung, landslides buried homes and swept away houses after persistent rainfall. Nine people died there on Sunday and one in a separate incident on Saturday, The Times of India reported, citing local authorities.

Four of Sunday’s deaths occurred in Tamankhola Rural Municipality, where one person was also reported missing. Five others died in Nisikhola Rural Municipality. Among them were a mother and her three children, whose home was buried in Haddhara, according to the report. In Dharnasuk village, two people were killed and eight houses were swept away.

Security personnel reached affected communities with support from a Nepali Army helicopter. Baglung’s chief district officer, Krishna Prasad Acharya, said early warnings had helped prevent further casualties.

Rivers rise as families leave their homes

The damage extends beyond the landslide sites. Media reports said that the Kali Gandaki River had caused extensive damage, while the Narayani and Tinau rivers had brought flooding, erosion and waterlogging to other areas.

Authorities said roughly 1,500 people from 435 households had been displaced in Gandaki province. Parbat was among the districts facing the worst damage to homes, with 106 houses reported destroyed.

The death tolls in the reports reflect different updates: The Times of India cited an earlier nationwide figure of 21, while India Today subsequently reported 24 dead and 14 missing. Rescue and relief work was continuing in the affected districts.
