The OnePlus 12 is getting ready to make its debut, first in China later this year and then in the global market early in 2024. We’ve had a glimpse of its specs through leaks, and from the renders we’ve seen, it seems like the new phone will closely resemble its previous model. Let’s find out more details about the upcoming smartphone.

OnePlus 12 release date

The OnePlus 11 came out in China in January 2023 and was released worldwide in February. The OnePlus 10 Pro was launched in January 2022, and the OnePlus 9 series came out in March 2021.

If we look at the pattern over the last three years, it seems like OnePlus usually releases its new phones between January and March. So, we can expect the OnePlus 12 to come out in January or February of the following year, around a year after the OnePlus 11.

There’s a leak suggesting that the OnePlus 12 might be revealed in China in December 2023 and then have a global launch in February 2024. However, another leaker, Max Jambor, thinks it might go global in January.

OnePlus 12 Specs & Features

The OnePlus 12 is getting a makeover with changes in its design. There will be new ringtones and improved options for customizing the lock screen. Plus, it will feature a new engine that makes using the interface smoother compared to earlier versions.

The company is also giving due attention to the camera improvements. While OnePlus phones typically offer decent cameras, they sometimes face tougher competition in their price range. The great news is that this might no longer be a concern with the new phone.

An upgraded camera

There’s a new rumor about the camera specs of the OnePlus 12, and it seems like the Chinese company is making some upgrades to the camera system to help you take better photos with every lens.

The OnePlus 12 will come with a 50-megapixel primary camera using a Sony IM966 sensor, which is a bit larger than the one on the OnePlus 11. It also features a 48-megapixel ultra-wide lens. The most significant change is the addition of a 64-megapixel 3x periscope zoom lens from Omnivision. This marks the first time a OnePlus device will have a periscope camera. If you’re a fan of zoom photography, this upgrade should significantly enhance your results.

Design

While OnePlus typically changes the design of its phones every year, it appears that the Chinese manufacturer is sticking with a similar look for the OnePlus 12. Early renders of the OnePlus 12 reveal a design that’s mostly the same as this year’s model, with a similar arrangement of camera modules and an LED flash. The only notable change is that the Hasselblad branding has been shifted to the side. It’s no longer placed in the middle of both sets of camera lenses.

Renowned leaker Steve ‘OnLeaks’ Hemmerstoffer, along with SmartPrix, unveiled some early renders of the OnePlus 12 on July 12. There seems to be a periscope zoom camera located at the bottom of the camera setup. Also, this time around, there’s a punch-hole cutout right in the center of the screen. This is a change from the previous left-aligned position.

Additionally, an alert slider, a favorite feature among long-time OnePlus users, is visible. It’s important to remember that these images are based on a prototype. They’re not the usual 3D CAD designs Hemmerstoffer typically relies on, so the final design may differ significantly.

Other leaks

In September, OnLeaks and MySmartPrice shared more renders, this time based on real-life images of pre-production units. New images show the OnePlus 12 without a periscope zoom lens, possibly going back to a telephoto lens. There’s also a mysterious component next to the camera lenses.

A leaker known as Digital Chat Station on Weibo also mentioned that the OnePlus 12 will come in a white color option, and this variant is expected to feature a glossy glass back.

We’ve also seen leaked images of the India-exclusive OnePlus 12R. The OnePlus 12R is expected to trim down a few specifications to maintain a lower price. Notably, it’s likely to debut with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, which is current technology. However, the OnePlus 12 is anticipated to launch with the more advanced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, making the 12R a generation behind in terms of processing power.

OnePlus 12 hardware upgrades

OnePlus is known for excellent hardware. The OnePlus 12 is set to continue this tradition with early leaks suggesting it will have the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. It will come with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, ensuring smooth performance and ample space. There’s even talk of a model with an impressive 24GB of RAM for high-performance tasks.

Display and internal hardware

The OnePlus 12 is likely to maintain the strong foundation established by its predecessor when it comes to its display and internal hardware. Anticipated to sport a 6.7-inch QHD+ AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, this device should continue to provide an impressive visual experience. Users who enjoyed the OnePlus 11’s screen and internal hardware should be pleased to hear that.

Battery life boost

Leaks suggest that the OnePlus flagship will feature a substantial 5,400mAh battery. This is notably larger than the standard 5,000mAh battery commonly found in most modern smartphones. Such a substantial battery capacity will easily last for two full days on a single charge. Even the current 5,000mAh battery in the OnePlus 11 provides commendable battery life. Users typically enjoy a day and a half of usage between charges. With the OnePlus 12’s enhanced battery capacity, users can look forward to even more extended periods of usage.
