On July 14, Eurogamer tied console price pressure to component shortages. The outlet said generative AI data centers were soaking up memory supply. It also reported rumors that Sony’s PlayStation 6 could cost up to $1,000 to make. Because of that pressure, Eurogamer said this generation had broken an old pattern. Base console prices rose after launch rather than fell.
Still, some developers prefer a slower handoff. Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, director of The Blood of Dawnwalker, told Eurogamer that a delayed next generation is “better for us.”
A handheld rumor puts discs under pressure
In a July 15 piece, The Verge wrote that the PS6 “sure sounds like a handheld.” It cited a rumor that a PlayStation handheld could run “full-fat PS5 games.” Still, the report gave no confirmed specifications.

Sony has said it will continue supplying retailers with products to sell, Push Square reported. The outlet said retailers may sell boxed download codes instead of discs. Retail supply matters because regulators may weigh whether players still have real choices.
What that means for PlayStation 7
None of those reports turns PS6 talk into PS7 news. They point to Sony’s next generation, possible handheld hardware and a shift away from physical media. So a PlayStation 7 release date in 2026 has no public footing.
