Russia reports deadly day with record daily COVID deaths

The official monitoring and response centre in Russia reported 852 coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24 hours, the highest daily increase since the start of the pandemic, bringing the national death toll to 205,531.

Meanwhile, 21,559 new Covid-19 cases were reported, bringing the total number of cases to 7,464,708, while the number of recoveries increased by 17,368 to 6,635,485, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Moscow reported 2,541 new cases, bringing the total number of cases in the city to 1,626,918.

Following a surge in new cases in recent weeks, the Russian capital intends to strengthen monitoring of mask use in shopping malls and restaurants, with strict fines for noncompliance.
