A 66-year-old man accused of plotting to assassinate Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz had improvised explosives in his apartment, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Polish authorities found “a dozen or so items” in the man’s home, following his detention on Sunday, Piotr Skiba, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office, told journalists.

“It was determined that these are improvised explosive materials,” he said.

Skiba said metal balls found inside a flash bang grenade were likely “explosive devices similar to fragmentation grenades”.

The suspect — identified under Polish privacy law as Krzysztof N. — additionally enlisted others who possessed weapons to cooperate with him.

He has been charged with nine offences, including “planning to overthrow the state authorities by force”.

The man did not admit to the alleged offences and refused to provide an explanation.

If found guilty, he faces from two to 15 years in prison.

Poland — a NATO and EU member state on the eastern flank of both blocs, has been on high alert following a recent wave of stabbing attacks.
