Users say Facebook adding AI-Generated Captions on Shared Posts

Facebook is Adding AI-Generated Captions

Normally, when you share posts on Facebook, the content should appear exactly as it does without any alterations. If any manual caption is on the posts, it should stay the same after sharing on the app. But this is currently not the case for many users today. New reports indicate that users are now complaining that Facebook is quietly adding AI-generated captions to shared posts. This new development doesn’t seem to sit well with many users, as they’re frustrated about it.

Understanding the situation where Facebook is Adding AI-Generated Captions to Posts

Many users are currently frustrated about Meta’s quiet move to add AI-generated captions to their shared posts. Describing the issue, the affected users said AI inserts phrases like “bussin no cap” and “totally glazing rn”. It does that automatically without seeking any permission from the creator.

Furthermore, some users added that the issue also happens when sharing news articles or a simple memory. This means the Facebook AI is also adding AI-generated captions to news posts and memory. What’s even more annoying is that the captions are generated based on the AI’s thoughts about the post.

Imagine posting about the death of a child, and the AI is adding absolutely massive. That’s exactly what happened when this Reddit user posted recently. The user said: “I just shared a post of a child in my hometown that passed away from cancer, and it was posted with “absolute massive w”. I didn’t notice and deleted it until a few minutes had passed.”

Facebook is Adding AI-Generated Captions

Reading through different threads on this matter, one can safely say that the affected users are very disappointed and frustrated with the new development.

Why is this happening?

As noted by PiunikaWeb, it seems users are misinterpreting the previously introduced “Allow AI-generated titles on your posts” setting. They’re confusing this option with the “turn off these automatic captions.” If you don’t know, this feature is designed to be used when posting in a public group. Besides, this feature isn’t widely available for use

As for the issue where Facebook is adding AI-generated captions, Meta has yet to say anything about it. This means double-checking your post before sharing is key at this stage to avoid having your post captioned unnecessarily.
