Videos shared on social media shows a massive explosion / blast has rocked the capital of Lebanon, Beirut.
The cause of the Beirut’s explosion / blast is unknown but it is feared there are many casualties. Reports say the explosion was so powerful that it was even heard in Cyprus.
According to Health Minister Hamad Hasan, an explosion in central Beirut on Tuesday had caused a “very high number of injuries” and extensive damage.
“What happened was like the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings”, said Governor of Beirut in a statement.
“I saw a fireball and smoke billowing over Beirut. People were screaming and running, bleeding. Balconies were blown off buildings. Glass in high-rise buildings shattered and fell to the street,” said a Reuters witness.
According to CNN, The blast sent up a huge mushroom cloud-like shockwave and damaged buildings miles from the port, including the HQ of Ex-Prime Minister Saad Hariri and CNN’s bureau in Beirut.
The news of explosion comes amid growing tensions between Israel and the militant Hezbollah group along Lebanon’s southern border.
