Discord goes down: “We are currently investigating a widespread API outage” [UPDATED]

Discord, a VoIP application that lets users talk and chat, went down for several users on Wednesday.

“We are currently investigating a widespread API outage,” Discord update said on its status page.

Discord said they have identified the issue: “We have identified the underlying issue with the API outage but are dealing with a secondary issue on one of our database clusters. We have our entire on-call response team online and responding to the issue.”

“We have instituted a rate limit on logins to manage the traffic load. Users who are logged in are successfully using Discord at this point, and we will be slowly raising the limits here to allow more users in as we can,” Discord said in a new update” We expect this to be resolved in the next 15 minutes.”

At 12:21 PST, the status page posted another update: “We are continuing to work through some issues with one of our database clusters. We are still rate limiting login traffic. Next update in 15 minutes.”

DownDetector, the popular website to track outages, reports problem with the Discord service.

“The Discord messaging platform is experiencing international API-related service outages at the present time; incident not related to country-level internet disruptions or filtering,” NetBlocks confirmed in a post on Twitter.

UPDATE Jan 26, 13:07 PST: “More than half of Discord users are back online and working normally. We continue to work to bring the rest of the users back online,” Discord wrote on its status page.

FINAL UPDATE: Discord says “connection should be fully restored now.”
