iOS 16 update causes screen flickering issue

Among the plethora of issues caused by iOS 16, the screen flickering issue has been showing up for some users.

While the accessibility improvements, customizable lock screen, and iMessage editing support are all good upgrades, the bugs are becoming annoying for many people. The glitches interfere with the users’ experience, especially for those who recently bought the iPhone 14.

There have also been issues with ghost touch and the Assistive Touch button after the update.

iOS 16 screen flickering issue on low brightness, grey screens

Many iPhone users took to Reddit and Twitter to post about their issues. Users notice a constant flickering of light on their screen after upgrading to iOS 16.

“Has anybody noticed a slight screen flickering while typing? (iPhone 12, bought 1,5 month ago) It’s especially noticeable on lower screen brightness, and on grey screens (like in the translate app) I’m pretty sure it wasn’t present on iOS 15,” a user posted.

“Guys my screen is sort of flickering after the update it’s sort of getting vibrant and back to normal in very few seconds. So it feels like its flickering when touched is this happening with you too check it in dark mode in safari or dark-themed apps like discord or something basically it’s noticeable on grey color,” another user posted.

It is possible that the issue is mainly related to the iPhone models with AMOLED displays such as the iPhone 13, iPhone 12, and iPhone 11 Pro/Max.

It is quite strange that the issue occurs only on low brightness or while using apps with a gray or dark background. Some even reported that their iPhone screen flickers while typing on a keyboard.

“Two days ago I updated my iPhone 11 Pro Max from iOS 15.6 to iOS 16.0. Ever since I updated, a weird flickering issue popped up, most noticeable when typing and in grey backgrounds,” a user posted on Reddit.

Past issue with iPhone 12

A similar issue also occurred last year for iPhone 12 users. It was later fixed with a software update. So there is a possibility that the iOS 16 screen flicker issue will be resolved too.

Unfortunately, there are no workarounds for now or an official acknowledgment from Apple. Users can try to restart their phones or take the extreme step of resetting to factory settings.
