Texas Children’s Hospital has opened what Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton describes as the nation’s first detransition clinic, fulfilling a key requirement of a $10 million settlement reached with state and federal authorities.

Paxton announced the clinic’s opening on October 27, following a settlement reached earlier this year over allegations of improper Medicaid billing related to gender-transition procedures.

The settlement, involving Paxton’s office and the U.S. Department of Justice, resolved claims that the hospital had submitted improper bills for gender-transition treatments, including procedures restricted under Texas law.

Under the agreement, Texas Children’s Hospital agreed to pay $10 million, establish a dedicated detransition clinic and end the provision of certain gender-transition interventions. The settlement also required the termination of medical privileges for several physicians.

What the New Clinic Offers

The new clinic provides medical care to patients who previously underwent gender-transition treatments and are now seeking detransition-related care.

Patients up to age 21 can receive a range of medical services, while those older than 21 are eligible for detransition-related obstetric and gynecological care.

According to the hospital, the clinic brings together specialists in endocrinology, surgery, primary care, fertility counseling, psychiatry, psychology and other fields.

Treatment plans will be tailored to individual patients. Depending on their medical needs, patients may receive care at different Texas Children’s Hospital locations.

The settlement also requires the hospital to fully fund the clinic’s services for its first five years, allowing patients to receive care at no cost during that period.

Texas Children’s Hospital has published information about the clinic on its website, including an online appointment request form. Patients seeking treatment will first undergo a virtual assessment to determine their medical needs.
