A newly released police body-camera footage shows the arrest of Luigi Mangione. The footage of the arrest inside a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania has been released after being obtained by CNN.  Mangione is the primary suspect in fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024.

The nationwide manhunt lasted five days. The footage records the time of the arrest as 9:14 am on December 9, 2024. The arrest was publicly announced by Commissioner Jessica Tisch at 1:45 pm. Following the shooting on December 4, police conducted an extensive search.

The arrest of Luigi Mangione

The footage captures events from the initial police encounter to Mangione’s processing at the police station. Police officers responded to a tip over the radio.

When officers initially approached him seated at a table near the back, they ask him to lower his mask. After obliging, he identifies himself as “Mark Rosario” and presents a fraudulent New Jersey driver’s license. The investigation revealed that this was the same fake identity that Mangione had used to check into the New York City hostel before the shooting. Officer Joseph Detwiler later testified he “knew within one second” it was Luigi Mangione when he lowered his mask.

Given the sensitivity of the matter, police used psychological stalling tactics rather than immediate aggression. Officer Detwiler even made conversation about the food Mangione was having at the time. The officers told Mangione that they were responding to a generic complaint that people had been hanging around the restaurant for too long.

Once backup arrived, he was subsequently handcuffed for forgery. Police personnel are seen searching his pockets and backpack, from which they recovered a gun magazine wrapped in underwear. Authorities later alleged that the weapon was connected to the killing.

The body camera footage at the police station shows officers searching his belongings. Items found in his backpack included a jar of peanut butter, a Faraday bag, domestic and foreign passports, a handwritten escape note that included instructions on how to alter his appearance, a 3D-printed gun, a silencer, and his written anti-corporate manifesto.
