Samsung Galaxy S20 Android 11 update release date

Galaxy S20 users report GPS issues; Galaxy Note 8 and S8 suffer, too

Samsung is going to have a very busy next few months. The Korean company is preparing to launch the Galaxy Note 20 series on August 5. It is also reportedly working on the Android 11 update for the Galaxy S20 lineup, which was released earlier this year. Fresh reports suggest that Samsung has been working on One UI 3.0 skin on top of Android 11 for the Galaxy S20 series. But the company hasn’t announced a release date for the update.

When is Android 11 coming to Samsung Galaxy S20?

An XDA Developers community member has found that Samsung’s official firmware version tracker has mentioned Android 11 as the latest OS version for the Galaxy S20 Ultra. For some reason, the Korean company has since updated the tracker to mention Android 10 instead of Android 11 as the latest OS version. Maybe it wants to keep things secret for now.

Google is expected to release Android 11 to compatible smartphones in late August or early September. A September 8 release date for the Android 11 update has been doing rounds in the rumor mill for weeks. Vendors such as Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi and others that are working on their own custom skin on top of Android 11 should release their versions soon after.

One UI 2.5 or 3.0?

Previous reports have indicated that Samsung would bring the One UI 2.5 skin to the Galaxy S20 series first, and then update to One UI 3.0. The upcoming Galaxy Note 20 will reportedly run the One UI 2.5 out of the box. But the S20 series will likely skip the 2.5 and jump straight to 3.0 version.

Last year, Samsung released the Galaxy S10 with One UI 1.1. When it launched the Galaxy Note 10 running One UI 1.5, the S10 series didn’t get the 1.5. Soon after, Samsung rolled out a major One UI 2.0 to the S10 series. Something similar is expected to happen with the Samsung Galaxy S20 Android 11 update.

Recently, a tipster on Chinese microblogging site Weibo posted an image showing a set of code and the model number SM-G988B. It indicates that Samsung is testing Android 11 based One UI 3.0 skin on the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. Only time will tell how accurate this leak would turn out to be. Meanwhile, Samsung fans are eagerly looking forward to the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Watch 3 next week.
