The container ship that slammed into a Baltimore bridge early Tuesday issued a Mayday call moments before, a move which saved lives as officials halted some road traffic, Maryland’s governor said.

The ship, moving at a “rapid” eight knots (9 miles per hour), alerted authorities that it had lost power, prompting officials to rush to limit cars from traveling over the Francis Scott Key Bridge, Governor Wes Moore told reporters.

“These people are heroes. They saved lives last night,” said.
