So far, since the creation of the office, there have been 48 vice presidents in the country. Initially, the vice presidents of the United States were always selected, based on the number of votes an individual received during a presidential election. At that time, anybody that gets the second most votes for president in the electoral college automatically gets the post. However, the Twelfth Amendment added to the US Constitution has changed the system to a new one, which allows electors to cast a different ballot for the post.
