Officials across metro Atlanta, Georgia and various areas in the Southeastern United States like South Carolina and Tennessee reported seeing a “fireball” streak through the sky on Thursday afternoon.
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City received numerous reports from metro Atlanta residents of a loud boom accompanied by shaking and rumbling around 12:15 p.m. However, the U.S. Geological Survey recorded no earthquake activity in Georgia at that time.
According to FOX Weather, the American Meteor Society received over 100 reports of a possible fireball sighting.
The sightings began around midday, with witnesses describing what looked like falling debris—possibly a meteor or asteroid—flashing through the atmosphere.
According to WYFF TV in South Carolina, the National Weather Service office in Greenville-Spartanburg reviewed video footage and said it “appears to be a meteorite.”
The Roswell Fire Department, along with emergency officials in Forsyth and Dawson counties, confirmed they received numerous eyewitness reports, according to 11 Alive TV.
In Rockdale County, residents reported hearing a loud boom and feeling their homes shake, 11 Alive also noted.
Atlanta journalist Cody Alcorn posted a video taken along I-85 in Upstate South Carolina that appears to show an object descending from the sky.
