The release of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) on November 19, 2026, could cause a $1 billion loss to the United States economy. The projected loss would result from an estimated 1.5 million employees skipping work on launch day to play the game, according to a report by Spanish broadcaster Cadena SER.
The Macroeconomic Impact
The economic strain is driven primarily by men aged 18 to 30 and professionals working within the technology sector. A structural shift in worker behavior is taking place ahead of the game’s release.
The game is estimated to require 80 hours for a standard playthrough. Therefore, rather than taking a day off, employees are playing smart. Millions of employees are utilizing accumulated paid time off (PTO) to convert the Thursday launch into an extended personal holiday. Consequently, widespread employee absences are anticipated.
A number of companies have begun writing the GTA 6 launch date directly into their end-of-year compensation structures and employment packages. For instance, Burger Motorsports, a car tuning and auto-parts company in California, officially announced a day off on November 19. The company said it received a large volume of simultaneous requests for time off that would make it impossible to operate that day.
Offering time off for the release is meant to attract talent and improve employee retention.
Preorder Sales
According to Sensor Tower, total preorder revenue has already surpassed $600 million. Reports indicate that the game cleared $1 billion within the very first hour of preorders opening. Analysts estimate that total launch-week consumer sales will range between $3 billion and $5 billion.
GTA 6 is also an expensive video game to develop. The total development and production budget is estimated to be between $1 billion and $2 billion. Moreover, Rockstar Games’ parent company, Take-Two Interactive Software estimates more than $1 billion in operating cash flow for the fiscal year.
GTA 6 will launch on November 19, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. No PC version will be available at launch, and the online multiplayer component is expected to be released in 2027. Moreover, digital preloading begins on November 12, 2026. In the United States, the standard edition is priced at $79.99.
