Auckland, Osaka, and Adelaide are three of the most liveable cities in the world in 2021, according to EIU’s Global Liveability Ranking. But are these two cities on the top 10 list of the best cities to live in, in 2022? You’ll discover the answer to this question as you continue reading this article.

The Global Liveability Ranking, organized by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), is an annual report that has been around for many years. This index focuses on assessing 172 global cities (initially 140) based on a couple of factors. These factors are; stability, healthcare, culture & environment, education, and infrastructure.

In 2021, Auckland was ranked as the most liveable city by the EIU. In 2019 & 2018, Vienna (in Austria) topped the list, scoring 99.1 out of 100 in both years. For seven straight years (2011 to 2017), Melbourne was ranked EIU’s world’s most liveable city.

The Global Liveability Ranking 2022 was conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit between February 14th and March 13th. In case you don’t know, the EIU is one of the leaders in global business intelligence. The EIU focused on 172 different cities for the Global Liveability Ranking 2022. Sitting on the list of the top 10 worst cities to live in, in 2022 are Damascus, Lagos, Tripoli, Algiers, Karachi, Port Moresby, Dhaka, Harare, Douala, and Tehran.

The result of the assessment showed Vienna is currently the world’s most liveable city in 2022. The city topped the list because it scored a perfect score in some areas, such as stability, healthcare, infrastructure, and education. Here’s the top 10 list of the best cities to live in 2022

1. Vienna, Austria (1st)

Sitting in the first position on the EIU’s Liveability Ranking 2022 is ‘Vienna’. This is not the first time this city will be topping this list. It was ranked first in 2018 and 2019. In 2021, however, the city was nowhere to be found on the top 10 list.

Well, according to the new ranking, Vienna is currently the world’s most liveable city in 2022. That’s so because it scored 99.1 out of 100. The EIU calculated the score based on different factors (and scores). Under the “Stability” factor, Vienna scored 100 percent. The same thing also goes for infrastructure, healthcare, and education. However, the city dropped some points under the “Culture & Environment” category, scoring 96.3 out of 100.

2. Copenhagen, Denmark (2nd)

With a total index of 98.0 (out of 100), Copenhagen occupies the second position on the top 10 list of the best cities to live in, in 2022. Below is the breakdown of Copenhagen’s scores in various categories:

  • Healthcare – 95.8
  • Culture & Environment – 95.4
  • Education – 100.0
  • Infrastructure – 100.0

3. Zurich, Switzerland (3rd)

Zurich occupies the third position on the top 10 list of the best cities to live in, in 2022. In case you don’t know, this city is known as the global center for banking and finance. Zurich currently occupies this position because of the following breakdown:

  • Stability – 95.0
  • Healthcare – 100.0
  • Culture & Environment – 96.3
  • Education – 91.7
  • Infrastructure – 96.4

With that, Zurich has a total index of 96.3, making it the third world’s most liveable city in 2022.

4. Calgary, Canada (3rd)

Calgary has the same index as Zurich, making it occupy the same third spot. It is a cosmopolitan Alberta city in Canada, which is known for its many skyscrapers. The Economist Intelligence Unit ranked this city third based on various factors, which you can see below:

Calgary has a total index of 96.3, that’s the same as that of Zurich. As such, it is also the third world’s most liveable city in 2022.

5. Vancouver, Canada (5th)

Vancouver, another city in Canada, occupies the fifth position on the EIU’s top 10 list of the best cities to live in, in 2022. It’s one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the country. That’s not all; Vancouver is also one of the densest cities in Canada.

According to the 2022 EIU’s Global Liveability Ranking, here’s the breakdown of how Vancouver’s scores below:

  • Healthcare – 100.0
  • Culture & Environment – 100.0
  • Education – 100.0
  • Infrastructure – 92.9

With these scores, Vancouver has a total index of 96.1, making it the 5th most liveable city in the world today. Nowadays, a lot of people are moving to Vancouver and other cities in Canada for the purpose of working, studying, or even getting married on the bases of common law marriage in Canada (mariage de fait au Canada), if the couple has lived together for at least 12 months.

6. Geneva, Switzerland (6th)

Occupying the sixth spot on the EIU’s top 10 best cities to live in 2022 is ‘Geneva’. This city is one of the biggest in Switzerland. You’ll find the headquarters of Europe’s United Nations and the Red Cross in this city.

According to the EIU’s latest ranking, here’s the breakdown of Geneva’s scores based on various factors, such as healthcare and education:

  • Stability – 95.0
  • Healthcare – 100.0
  • Culture & Environment – 94.9
  • Education – 91.7
  • Infrastructure – 96.4

Overall, the average score of Geneva is 95.9; this makes it the 6th most liveable city in the world.

7. Frankfurt, Germany (7th)

Frankfurt is a central city in Germany. It’s currently the 7th most liveable city in the world because of the following breakdown:

  • Stability – 90.0
  • Healthcare – 100.0
  • Culture & Environment – 96.3
  • Education – 91.7
  • Infrastructure – 100.0

Overall, Frankfurt has a total index of 95.7 out of 100.

8. Toronto, Canada (8th)

Toronto is the third country on this list. This city is currently the capital of the province of Ontario. Toronto makes it on this list because of the following breakdown by the EIU:

  • Healthcare – 100.0
  • Culture & Environment – 95.4
  • Education – 100.0
  • Infrastructure – 89.3

The overall index of Toronto, based on the scores above, is 95.4.

9. Amsterdam, Netherlands (9th)

Amsterdam, known as artistic heritage, is the capital of the Netherlands. Here’s the breakdown of its scores, according to the EIU’s Global Liveability Ranking 2022:

  • Culture & Environment – 97.2
  • Education – 91.7

10. Osaka, Japan (10th)

Osaka is a commercial center in Japan and it’s known for its large port. According to the EIU’s latest ranking, here’s the breakdown of Osaka’s scores below:

  • Education – 100.0
  • Infrastructure – 96.4

The overall index of Osaka, based on the scores above, is 95.1.

11. Melbourne in Australia (10th)

Melbourne is the capital (coastal) of Victoria, a southeastern Australian state. This city currently occupies the tenth position on the top 10 list of the best cities to live in, in 2022. Here’s the breakdown of Melbourne’s scores, according to the latest EIU’s Global Liveability Ranking 2022.

  • Stability – 95.0
  • Healthcare – 83.8
  • Culture & Environment – 98.6
  • Education – 100.0
  • Infrastructure – 100.0

The overall index of Melbourne, based on the scores above, is 95.1. That’s the same score as that of Osaka. This explains why we have two cities in the tenth spot.
