OpenAI has launched a new version of ChatGPT for teenagers. The company says the experience includes stronger safety features, learning tools and parental controls.
ChatGPT for Teens is designed for users aged 13 to 17. Teenagers who enter an age within that range will automatically use the teen version.
OpenAI can also use age-prediction technology to identify accounts that may belong to users under 18.
Stronger safety rules for teens
The teen version places tighter limits on sensitive content.
These safeguards cover topics such as self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities and sexually explicit material.
ChatGPT is also designed to avoid romantic interactions with teenagers. In addition, the system aims to prevent behavior that could encourage emotional dependence on the chatbot.
OpenAI says these changes are intended to create a safer experience for younger users.
More focus on learning
Education is another major part of ChatGPT for Teens.
The service includes Study Mode, which encourages students to work through problems step by step. Instead of simply giving an answer, the tool can guide users through the learning process.
OpenAI is also adding homework reminders. These can appear when students seem to be looking for shortcuts.
Teenagers can also use quizzes and visual learning tools to test their knowledge.
In addition, Study Hours allow teens or parents to choose certain times when Study Mode becomes the default experience.
New tools encourage healthier use
OpenAI is also introducing features designed to support healthier AI use.
Teenagers will receive reminders to take breaks during long ChatGPT sessions. They will also see warnings before uploading sensitive images.
The platform will also remind users that they are talking to artificial intelligence rather than a real person.
Parents receive more controls
Parents who connect their accounts with their teenager’s account can manage several settings.
For example, they can set Quiet Hours and adjust certain ChatGPT features. Parents may also receive notifications in limited high-risk situations.
OpenAI is expanding these alerts to include concerns related to eating disorders.
The launch comes as AI companies face growing scrutiny over how chatbots affect young people.
OpenAI says the new teen experience builds on earlier safety measures, including parental controls and age-prediction systems.
The company also plans to continue studying how teenagers use AI and improve its safety systems over time.
