Global monitoring agencies have recorded more than 150 major earthquakes across the Pacific Ring of Fire over a seven-day period. The magnitudes of these earthquakes have been recorded at 4.5 or higher

The strongest earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.7, occurred on October 9, 2026, in southern Panama. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that it occurred at a shallow depth of 12.6 to 13 kilometers. Moreover, it was centered approximately 6 to 9 miles southwest of the remote community of Pitaloza Arriba on the Azuero Peninsula. Less than three hours later, a powerful magnitude 6.6 aftershock was recorded near Rio Grande.

Shortly after the magnitude 7.7 earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning System issued localized hazardous wave forecasts along thousands of miles of coastline.

State of Emergency

Panama’s government has declared a national state of emergency. The National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC) has recorded extensive infrastructure damage. Approximately 134 houses were affected by structural cracking and partial collapses. In addition, damage was reported to 188 school buildings nationwide. Furthermore, 27 injuries have been recorded. The majority of the damage is concentrated in the provinces of Herrera, Coclé, Los Santos, and Veraguas.

In Veraguas, towns like Arena, Cacao, and Quebro were completely cut off due to infrastructure failures. This resulted in widespread electricity blackouts, shortages of clean water, and internet disruptions. Emergency authorities confirmed that no fatalities or missing persons had been reported immediately after the earthquake.

The Pacific Ring of Fire

The Ring of Fire is a 40,000-kilometer horseshoe-shaped region of intense volcanic and tectonic plate activity surrounding the Pacific Ocean basin. It is widely recognized as the most seismically active zone on Earth. Approximately 90% of the world’s earthquakes originate in this region. The region also houses 750 active volcanoes.

While Central America was most impacted, the broader 40,000-kilometer-long region also experienced significant seismic activity during the same period. For instance, a severe magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck northeast of Norsup. A tremor with a magnitude of 5.5 was felt across Aleneva, Alaska. Moreover, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurred deep beneath the Fiji region.
