On October 7, eight members of the Salford Astronomical Society reported seeing mysterious lights arranged in V-shaped and triangular formations in the sky. The lights were spotted directly above the society’s observatory in Salford, England. The witnesses submitted a formal report to the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) the next day.

The first encounter reportedly occurred at 7:54 p.m. directly above the observatory grounds. The astronomers witnessed a formation of six separate, glowing orange lights moving in unison. They were travelling smoothly from the northeast toward the southwest. The astronomers reported that the lights maintained fixed positions relative to one another. Their formation created a clear V-shaped, or chevron, pattern in the clear night sky.

Approximately 25 minutes after the initial V-shaped lights cleared the horizon, the observers reported a second, different formation of lights. This second group consisted of particularly bright white lights arranged in what appeared to be an equilateral triangle. Through the use of calibrated local observation fields, the astronomers calculated the outer perimeter of this triangular configuration to be between 100 and 200 feet wide. The lights marked the three corners of the triangular formation. However, the observers noted that there was no visible solid structure connecting the lights or filling the space between them.

The observers attempted to determine the source of the lights by systematically ruling out conventional aircraft and technology in the region. The possibility of drones was eliminated due to the total absence of operational noise and verifying that no drone flights were scheduled in the Salford airspace that evening. While the observers cross-checked the sightings against standard flight parameters to rule out typical aviation, the available records do not independently establish the exact origin or nature of the lights.
