Although many people believe that terrorism is a new phenomenon, the fact remains that it has existed for a very long time (more than 2,000 years). By definition, the term “terrorism” refers to the unlawful use of violence by a group or person. Furthermore, the purpose of that is to create fear in societies and to promote political or ideological beliefs. Admittedly, terrorist attacks occur in most countries in the world, but the rate at which it happens varies. According to the 2019 Global Terrorism Index, Afghanistan is the most terrorized country in the world. This year, several incidents relating to terrorist attacks have happened in the country and some other parts of the world. In this post, we’ll be sharing with you, the list of some of the most fatal terrorist attacks in 2020.

1- Drone and missile attack (Marib, Yemen)

Sitting on the first spot on our list of the most fatal terrorist incidents in 2020 is the drone and missile attack in Ma’rib, Yemen. The incident happened on January 18, and according to reports, the country recorded about 116 fatalities, including 111 Yemeni soldiers and five civilians. Furthermore, about 148 people reportedly sustained injuries during the terrorist attack. For now, the terrorist group that masterminded the attack is still unknown. However, according to speculations, it likely came from the Houthis militants as part of the Yemeni Civil War.

2- Suicide bombing (Kuz Kunar, Afghanistan)

Occupying the second spot on our list of the most fatal terrorist attacks in 2020 is the suicide bombing in Kuz Kunar, Afghanistan. The incident, which occurred on 12 May, claimed the lives of about 33 people. Furthermore, about 130 people sustained serious injuries during the bomb blast.

According to reports, the terrorist attack happened when a suicide bomber visited the funeral of a police chief in Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan. After the incident, the Islamic State (Khorasan Province) mentioned, that it was responsible for the attack.

3- Mass shooting (Filingue Department, Niger)

Next, on our list of the most fatal terrorist attacks in 2020, is the mass shooting in Filingue Department, Niger. According to reports, the incident, which occurred on 9 January, happened as a result of militant attacks (masterminded by the Islamic State) on a military outpost at Chinagodrar. Furthermore, reports confirmed that more than 80 military soldiers died during the attack, while six sustained serious injuries. As a result of French airstrikes, about 77 of the militants were also killed.

4- Boko Haram ambush (Borno State, Nigeria)

Another incident on our list of the most fatal terrorist attacks in 2020 is the Boko Haram ambush in Borno State, Nigeria. The incident, which happened on 23rd March, started when the popular Boko Haram insurgents attacked the Nigerian military vehicles by surprise. According to reports, the terrorist group utilized rocket-propelled grenades on them, resulting in the death of about 70 Nigerian soldiers, while several others sustained serious injuries.

5- Suicide bombings and mass shooting (Kabul, Afghanistan)

Occupying the fifth spot on our list of the most fatal terrorist attacks in 2020 is the suicide bombing and mass shooting incident in Kabul, Afghanistan. In case you don’t know, the terrorist incident happened on March 25, and resulted in the death of about 25 people. Furthermore, about 10 people also sustained serious injuries during the attack, masterminded by the Islamic State (Khorasan Province).

6- Mass shooting, missile attack (Kabul, Afghanistan)

Next, on our list of the most fatal terrorist attacks in 2020, is the mass shooting and missile attack in Kabul, Afghanistan. The incident, which happened on March 6, started when gunmen (sent by the Islamic State) attacked a ceremony, observed in honor of the Hazara leader Abdul Ali Mazari in Kabul. According to reports, about 32 people died during the attack, while more than 60 people sustained injuries.

7- Grenade attack (Afrin, Syria)

Occupying the seventh spot on this list is the grenade attack in Afrin, Syria. The bombing incident happened on April 28. It started after a grenade was fired at a fuel tanker near a market and a government ministry in Afrin. As a result of the explosion, about 53 people lost their lives, while more than 50 people sustained serious injuries. Although the exact perpetrator of the attack isn’t certain, the Turkish government blamed YPG for it.

8- Suicide bombing (Kabul, Afghanistan)

Sitting in the eighth position on our list of the most fatal terrorist attacks in 2020 is the suicide bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan. The incident, which happened on October 24, started when a suicide bomber attacked the Kabul education center, in Dashte Barchi. Reports have it that about 30 people died during the bomb attack, while 70 people sustained serious injuries. Furthermore, reports also confirmed that the Islamic State (Khorasan Province) masterminded the attack.

9- Bombing (Peshawar, Pakistan)

Next, on our list of the most fatal terrorist attacks in 2020, is the bombing attack in Peshawar, Pakistan. The incident happened on October 27. Furthermore, it started because of a bomb attack on a religious school in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar. According to several reports, about 8 people died during the incident, while more than 136 people sustained serious/minor injuries. Furthermore, reports suggest that Al-Qaeda likely masterminded the bomb blast incident.

10- Stabbing attack (Notre-Dame de Nice, France)

According to the latest reports, a terrorist attack happened today, at Notre-Dame de Nice. So far, three people have been confirmed dead by stabbing. Furthermore, a woman, who was also a victim, was beheaded by the attacker – a suspected terrorist in Europe.
